Pranayam & Meditation

Yoga is a journey – Of the Self, Through the Self, To the Self

This class in mainly focussed to sharpen the awareness by focussing on the subtle aspects of our being.

According to Patanjali,
PRANA (As breath) + AYAMA (Pause in the movement of breath)

According to Hatha Tradition,
PRANA (as subtle psychic energy, life force, cosmic energy) + AYAMA (Restrain or control)

Significance of Prana & Pranayama -

  • As long as prana is present in the body, life exists.
  • So long as breathing goes on, the mind remains unsteady.
  • To stop the mind, manipulation of breath (pranayama) is necessary.

Thus, pranayama is the science of regulating the vital energy or prana through the skillful manipulation of breath. By controlling the movement of breath, one develops harmony between physiological and psychological functions via influencing /improving the functions of lungs & heart and this, in turn, not only helps in maintaining our health but also prepares an individual for undertaking higher practices of yoga like – dharna, dhyana etc.
