Ashtang yoga is a traditional series of postures done usually in the same order every time. Vinyasa is like freestyle Ashtang. Vinyasas are flowing sequences of movements that connect each asana with the next. It links breath to movement, so it's more quickly paced and has a flowing rhythm. 

Vinyasa or Power yoga incorporates many of the same postures, but the order of the poses often changes. It is this transition and holding of postures with stability and awareness that makes Vinyasa or what we now know as Power yoga potentiate postures to produce heat. This results in flushing and burning out of physical and mental toxins.

Thus, Power Yoga is neither a hundred push-ups nor is it hundreds of fast Sun Salutations. Instead, it is a set of postures arranged in a specific sequence and as such is about a controlled movement from one posture to another as it is maintaining each posture with strength.
